How to care for a microfibre changing bag

A changing bag has a busy life. It meets pram handles, café floors, milk and the occasional leaking pot of purée. A little regular care keeps it looking good for years. The advice below is general good practice. Always check any care instructions that came with your own bag first.

Little and often

The easiest care is a quick wipe. Once a week, empty the bag, shake out the crumbs and wipe the outside with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Marks are much easier to remove while they are fresh.

Cleaning the outside

Mix a few drops of mild soap into lukewarm water. Dampen a soft cloth, wring it out well and wipe the microfibre in gentle, even strokes. Follow with a second cloth dampened with clean water, then pat dry. Test on a hidden area first. Avoid soaking the material, and skip bleach, solvents, alcohol-based cleaners and abrasive sponges, which can dull the finish.

Cleaning the inside

Turn the bag upside down over a bin or sink to shake out crumbs. A small handheld vacuum works well in the corners. For sticky spots, use the same mild soap and a damp cloth, then leave the bag open to air-dry. Do not use a hairdryer or place the bag on a radiator, since strong heat can stress the material and the glue.

Storing it well

When you are not using it, keep the bag in a dust bag or a clean pillowcase, filled gently with tissue paper or a soft cloth so it keeps its shape. Store it somewhere cool and dry, away from direct sunlight. Avoid plastic bags, which trap moisture. Keep it away from dark, unfinished fabrics, because dye can transfer onto pale surfaces.

Caring for brass hardware

Solid brass develops a soft patina over time, and many people like it. To keep it bright, wipe the hardware with a dry, soft cloth after handling. If you prefer a polished look, use a tiny amount of brass polish on a cloth, applied only to the metal and never to the fabric around it. Buff gently and wipe away any residue. Keep the turn-lock free of crumbs and sand, and close it gently.

Small habits that help

  • Avoid overfilling the bag, as strain on seams and straps adds up
  • Keep liquids in sealed containers
  • Wipe up spills straight away
  • Alternate between carry options so the straps wear evenly

In summary

A soft cloth, mild soap and a dry place to rest are most of what a bag needs. We chose animal-free microfibre and solid brass for The Bisou because they respond well to this kind of simple care, and they age gracefully with it.
